HW for Tuesday, 1/14

Consider the poem we read in class today -- "A Poison Tree" by William Blake-- and explore one of these ideas.  Your response must be at least 250 words long and be thoughtful and well organized and follow the formatting guidelines.  Please save the document in your online "Writer's Notebook" and print a copy to turn in, as well.

1) Have you ever planned revenge or wanted to get back at someone who you felt treated you poorly?  Did you carry out your plan?  Did it havethe effect on the other person that you anticipated? How did it affect you?

2) How do you generally deal with anger at another person, especially a friend?  Will you explain to that person why you are angry?  Or, would you, like Blake's narrator, allow the anger to grow until it results in worse things happening?

3) Imagine that you are the narrator of Blake's poem.  Write another 3 quatrains that show how what you did to your foe affected you.  Are you pleased with the "success" of your plan?  Are you filled with remorse and regret for your actions?  Do you hope that you have sent a message to other foes not to mess with you? (FOR THIS ONE, YOU DO NOT NEED TO WROTE 250 WORDS, BUT YOUR 3 QUATRAINS MUST FOLLOW THE PATTERN SET BY BLAKE.)

HW for Monday, 1/13

Consider the poem we read in class today -- "Speak Up" by Janet S. Wong -- and explore one of these ideas.  Your response must be at least 250 words long and be thoughtful and well organized and follow the formatting guidelines.  Please save the document in your online "Writer's Notebook" and print a copy to turn in, as well.

1) Write about a time when you were insensitive to someone who was "different."  How was that person "different" in your eyes?  Or perhaps it was a time when you witnessed such treatment.  Or was there a time when you were on the receiving end of insensitivity because you were "different"? Consider why you were perceived as different in that situation.

2) What should the U.S.'s immigration policy be?  Let everyone in (we are, after all, the "melting pot")? Send all "foreigners" back to where they came from?

3) "Speak Up" poses an interesting question: just what does make someone an American?  Is it something you can see?  Is it about where you were born?  Is it about where your ancestors came from?  Is it about what you can contribute to your country?

4) Does speaker 2 want to be invisible in a way?  Have you ever wanted to be invisible?  Why?  You can write about a time and how you coped with the situation.

2) In your writer's journal, write a companion poem for "When It Is Snowing" in which you imagine that you are the blue jay.  Your poem should be at least 8 lines long and should include at least 1 metaphor and 1 strong image (refer to the worksheet -- remember, strong images come from vivid sensory details).

"Abandoned Farmhouse" writer's journal

THIS IS NOT THE WARM UP!  DO NOT DO THIS UNTIL YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN SPECIFIC INSTRUCTION!

1) Write a few journal entries as if by one of the adults in the farmhouse.
2) Write a letter from the wife/mother to her parents or siblings living in a different city.
3) Assume the man or his wife has left a letter behind.  What does it say?
4) Imitate the poet by rewriting several lines using your own ideas.
5) Make a list of what you think your room and/or possessions say about you and your life.  Model your list on the format Kooser uses throughout the poem: tall man too, says the length of the bed/in an upstairs room. Make sure that your list contains specific details, like the poem does.

HW for Tuesday, 1/7

Consider the poem we read in class today -- "Deserted Farm" by Mark Vinz -- and explore one of these ideas.  Your response must be at least 250 words long and be thoughtful and well organized and follow the formatting guidelines.  Please save the document in your online "Writer's Notebook" and print a copy to turn in, as well.

1) Write about a change or loss you have experienced and how it affected your life.  It could be losing a crucial ball game or the death of a friend or relative, for instance.

2) Change can bring opportunities as well as setbacks.  Moving to a new city, for instance, can bring exciting new surroundings and new friends, but also the sadness of leaving old friends and comfortable surroundings.  Write about some of the opportunities that have come to you because of change.

3) Can you think of a change you would like to see in yourself? What's stopping you?  What obstacles do you face?
